54 years is a long time in any business, but that's when Save Mart Supermarkets started a new standard in the grocery business. Save Mart opened first store in Modesto, California in January 17, of 1952. On September 2, 1986 the first FoodMaxx store was opened in Bakersfield. One month later a second FoodMaxx was added. Again Save Mart was setting a new standard in the grocery business. FoodMaxx expanded to Fresno and to Salinas. After a seven-year hiatus, FoodMaxx expanded to the Bay Area where growth literally "exploded", adding additional stores in Bakersfield, Modesto, Turlock and Fresno. The spring of 2004, brought the acquisition of 25 Food 4 Less stores, bringing the total to 44 stores under the FoodMaxx banner. Counting FoodMaxx and Save Mart stores, the company totals 124 stores in Northern California.
Today, the company enjoys great success despite an increasingly competitive marketplace. To better serve its customers, and to help maintain its reputation for low prices, Save Mart and FoodMaxx own and operate a dairy and grocery warehouse, trucking companies and Yosemite Wholesale, a distributor of fresh produce, quality meats and specialty food items.
After 54 years in the grocery business the company is still going strong. Recently the company was ranked number 37 in the top 50 grocery chains in the country- a formidable accomplishment for a California grown and locally-owned company.
